Ten days Weather advisory for Farmers (11^th to 20^th December, 2013)

Past Weather (1^st to 10^th December, 2013):

Light rainfall reported from few agricultural plains of Punjab, KP, GB and Kashmir and dry weather reported in Sindh and Balochistan.

Temperature Forecast:

Night temperatures are expected to drop slightly (1-2^OC in most of the agricultural plains of the country especially in upper parts of the country during the decade.

Rain Forecast:

v Punjab: Light to moderate rainfall is expected from 18^th to 20^th December in isolated upper parts of the province during the decade.

v Khyber Pakhtunkhwa:  Light to moderate rainfall is expected from 18^th to 20^th December in isolated upper hills of KP during the decade.

v Sindh:  Mainly cold and dry weather is expected in most parts of the province during the decade.

v Balochistan:  Light to moderate rainfall is expected from 17^th to 18^th December in isolated Northeast parts of the province during the decade.

v Gilgit Baltistan:  Light to moderate rainfall is expected from 18^th to 20^th December in isolated upper parts of the province during the decade.

v Kashmir:  Light to moderate rainfall is expected from 18^th to 20^th December in isolated upper parts of the province during the decade.

Wind Forecast:

Normal wind pattern may prevail in most of the agricultural plains of the country during the decade.

Advisory for Farmers:

v Wheat crop is growing at early stages in most of the barani areas of the country. Farmers of barani areas, obtaining crop water through tube wells are advised to schedule the irrigation according to the expected weather mentioned above during the decade.

v Wheat cultivation is in progress in most of the irrigated areas. Farmers of irrigated areas should irrigate the crop as per requirement due to dry weather prevailing in most of the irrigated agricultural plains of the country. Normally first irrigation is given after 20-25 days after sowing and 2^nd irrigation is given just before heading stage.

v Farmers of irrigated plains of Punjab, Sindh & KP are advised to complete sowing of wheat crop before 15^th December to get maximum yield. In case of late sowing in December, the recommended varities should be cultivated to minimize the expected loss in yield. Otherwise sunflower is also very beneficial to be cultivated in place of late sown wheat crop. Sunflower is cultivated from January to March throughout Pakistan.

v Farmers of barani areas are advised to remove weeds from the fields, so that the present soil moisture may fully be utilized.

v Falling of leaves has started from trees in wheat & other Rabi crops. Farmers should collect leaves from the crops as early as possible so that crop normal growth may not be disturbed.

Day & night temperatures are expected to fall in most of the agricultural plains of the country especially upper parts of the country during the decade.

Rain Forecast:

v Punjab: Mainly dry & cold weather is expected in most parts of the province especially in upper parts during the decade.

v Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: Mainly dry & cold weather (very cold in upper parts) is expected in most parts of the province during the decade, however, rain/thunderstorm with light snow over the hills may occur at a few places of Malakand division on 2^nd Dec and again during the end days of the decade.

v Sindh:  Mainly dry weather is expected in most parts of the province during the decade.

v Balochistan:  Mainly dry & cold weather is expected in most parts of the province during the decade.

v Gilgit Baltistan:  Mainly dry/partly cloudy & very cold weather is expected in most parts of the province during the decade. However; rain/thunderstorm with light snow over the hills may occur at isolated places on 2^nd Dec and again during the end days of the decade.

v Kashmir:  Mainly dry/partly cloudy & very cold weather is expected in most parts of Kashmir during the decade.

v Wheat cultivation is in progress in most of the rainfed areas. Farmers of rainfed areas are advised to sow their Rabi crops before 15^th November to get maximum yield. After this time the yield of wheat crop decreases gradually.

v Farmers of rainfed areas are advised to sow wheat crop by keeping in mind the above mentioned weather conditions during the current decade.

v Farmers of irrigated areas are advised to harvest Kharif crops including cotton in time so that timely sowing of Rabi crops especially wheat crop may be possible without any further delay.

v Farmers of irrigated plains of Punjab, Sindh & KP are advised to complete sowing of wheat crop before 15^th December to get maximum yield. In case of late sowing in december, the recommended varities should be cultivated to minimize the loss in yield.

Normal temperatures are expected in most of the agricultural plains of the country during the decade.

Rain Forecast:

v Punjab: Mainly hot and humid weather is expected in most parts of the province, however rain-thundershowers with occasional gaps would continue at isolated places in Islamabad & northeast Punjab (Rawalpindi, Gujranwala and Lahore divisions) during the decade. Rain-thunderstorm may also occur at few places of Southeastern & central parts of Punjab with occasional gaps during the 1^st half of the decade.

Mainly dry weather is reported from the agricultural plains of the country during the period. However light to moderate rain with snowfall over the hills is reported at a few places in Kashmir, Malakand, Hazara divisions and Gilgit-Baltistan.

Temperature Forecast:

Small diurnal temperature change is expected in parts of Punjab and KPK particularly in Lahore, Gujranwala, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Multan, Bahawalpur, Peshawar, Charsada and Sawabi divisions. Day temperatures are likely to remain below normal range in the above mentioned areas. Night temperatures of Kashmir, GB, Quetta and Kallat divisions are also likely to be 2-4°C below normal.

Rain Forecast:

Ø Punjab:  Mainly dry weather is expected in most parts of the province during the period. However parts of Punjab including Lahore, Gujranwala, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Multan, Bahawalpur may experience dense and prolonged foggy conditions.

Ø Khyber Pakhtoonkhawa:     Mainly dry weather is expected in most parts of the province during the period. However light rain with snowfall over the hills is expected 27^th and 28^th December in Malakand and Hazara divisions. Whereas plain areas of KPK including Peshawar, Charsada and Sawabi may experience dense and prolonged foggy conditions.

Ø  Sindh:  Mainly dry weather is expected during the decade. However parts of Upper Sindh may experience patchy fog during early hours of the day.

Ø Balochistan:  Mainly dry weather is expected during the decade.

Ø Kashmir & Gilgit-Baltistan:  Mainly cold & dry weather is expected during the decade. However light rain with snowfall over the hills is expected on 27^th to 29^th December.

Normal wind pattern is likely in most parts of the country.

Advisory for Farmers:

Ø Wheat cultivation is mostly completed in the agricultural plains of the country. Due to persistent dry weather, farmers of irrigated areas are advised to irrigate the crop as per requirement. Normally wheat crop is irrigated after 20-25 days of sowing in the agricultural plains of Pakistan.

Ø Water requirement of wheat crop varies during different growth or Phenological stages. Highest amount of water is needed during flowering stage followed by grain formation stages and then vegetative stages. Farmers of canal and self irrigated (tube wells) areas are advised to follow this order of water requirement for wheat crop for proper utilization of available water resources to get maximum production. Wheat crop needs normally 5-6 times irrigations during its life period.

Ø On time operation against weeds manually or through weedicides is of particular importance to save moisture and other soil nutrients from weeds. Farmers are advised to use recommended weedicides to remove weeds from the fields.

Wind Forecast:

Strong gusty winds/ dust storm are likely in parts of Balochistan on 11^th/12^th November 2011. Calm or light breeze conditions are likely to prevail over rest of the country.

Advisory for Farmers:

Ø Wheat cultivation is in progress in different parts of the country. The recent rainfall have amplified the soil moisture conditions in rainfed areas of Punjab including Potohar region and KPK therefore in the local farmers are advised to complete sowing in the current month. Considerable reduction in yield may take place if the crop is cultivated afterwards.

Ø The farmers of irrigated plains of Punjab, Sindh and KPK are advised to complete sowing upto 15^th of December to get maximum yield. In case of late sowing, the recommended varities should be cultivated to minimize the loss in yield.

Ø Water has not been flushed out from the low lying areas in Sindh and it is feared that water may remain in these affected areas beyond January next year thus affecting much the yield of main rabi crop “Wheat”. Alternatively, farmers in these areas may cultivate sunflower in January.

Night temperatures are likely to be below normal in most parts of Kashmir, Gilgit Baltistan, Malakand, Hazara and Rawalpindi divisions during the period. Parts of Sindh and Balochistan may also experience below normal temperatures from 2nd to 7th November 2011.
Rain Forecast:

• Punjab:  Scattered rain-dust/thunderstorm is likely in upper Punjab from 3rd to 4th November 2011.
• Khyberpakhtoon Khawa:      Scattered rain-dust/thunderstorm is likely in upper KPK from 3rd to 4th November 2011.

Rain Forecast:
Rain-Dust/Thunderstorm expected in Upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Upper Punjab and Kashmir at isolated places during the periods from 21st October to 23rd October and from 29th to 31st October. While no significant weather likely in other parts of the country.
Wind Forecast:
Strong gusty winds/ dust storm are likely in parts of Upper Punjab and Upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa during the periods from 21st October to 23rd October and from 29th to 31st October. Normal wind pattern is expected in other parts of the country.
Advisory for Farmers:

• Farmers of rainfed areas are advised to prepare land and remove all weeds on time for the sowing of coming Rabi crops especially wheat and sugarcane to minimize the loss in yield due to late sowing and to properly utilize the available moisture due to recent rains occurred.
• For rain affected areas of lower Sindh where farmers are still unable to cultivate sugarcane, it is advised that cane can be cultivated in patches of dry or high land of these affected districts provided landowners are able to prepare their land for sowing.
• Farmers of irrigated areas are informed that the expected available water for this Rabi season may be less than demand and as compared to the previous year. Therefore farmers should complete sowing of wheat and other Rabi crops including seasonal vegetables on time so that the present soil moisture may be utilized before evaporation and to save the crop from rising temperatures during heading and early maturity stages. Late sowing reduces about 20-30% yield of the crop and also delays the sowing of Kharif crops especially cotton.
• Farmers are also advised to cultivate recommended varities and follow the pre-sowing advices of agriculture department regarding seeds and field for each region to get maximum germination and to get plants free of any expected pest eggs.

Rain Forecast:

Mainly dry weather likely over most parts of the country during the forecast period. However thunderstorm/rainfall is expected at isolated places of Northeast Balochistan (Quetta and Zhob divisions) on 11th October. Temperature Forecast:

Nearly normal temperature range is expected in most parts of Punjab, KPK and Kashmir. While 2-3°C above normal temperatures, likely in Sindh and Balochistan.
Rain Forecast:

Mainly dry weather likely over most parts of Sindh, Balochistan and South Punjab. Thunderstorm/rainfall of light to moderate intensity is expected at scattered /isolated places of upper KPK, upper Punjab and Kashmir from 7th to 10th October, 2011.
Wind Forecast:

Normal wind pattern is likely to prevail over most parts of the country. Strong gusty winds are expected in upper Punjab (rice growing areas), upper KPK from 7th to 10th October 2011.

Rain / thunderstorms of moderate to heavy intensity with gusty winds have been reported from almost all agricultural planes of the country except Balochistan, where rainfall is reported at a few places of low to moderate intensity.
Temperature Forecast:
Day time temperature may remain in range 25-32°C in the agricultural planes of upper half of the country including agricultural planes of northern Punjab, upper KPK, Kashmir and GB. In the lower half, it may range between 30 and 38°C including agricultural planes of central and southern Punjab, Sindh and Balochistan during the decade. However, night temperature are not expected to below freezing in any part of country in the farming zone.
Rain Forecast:
Monsoon weather system has completely retreated from the country. Due to which clear skies/dry weather is expected in most of the agricultural planes of the country during the decade including central and southern Punjab, KPK, Sindh and Balochistan. Light rain may occur at a few places in the northern hilly areas of the country including Potohar plateau and sub mountainous Punjab, KPK, Kashmir and GB during the decade.
Wind Forecast:
Normal westerly/northwesterly wind pattern with no significant storm is predicted in most of the agricultural planes during the decade.
Advice for Farmers:
Ø    Farmers of the worst hit rain belt may focus their efforts to take care of residual surviving plants of cotton and other crop to support their livelihood. Rice being resistant to surplus water may be the best choice to yield a lot under prevailing conditions before the Rabi sowing.
Ø     Government assistance in terms of free seed and fertilizer for Rabi sowing is likely to be launched. Farmers should avail this opportunity to ensure timely sowing of Rabi crops.
Ø    Stagnant water may badly damage the standing crops in the agricultural planes of Sindh. Therefore drainage of water from fields may be made if possible so that the land may be prepared well on time for the sowing of wheat and other Rabi crops.

Rain / thunderstorms with gusty winds have been reported from almost all agricultural planes of the country. Heavy to very heavy rainfall along with flash flooding is reported from agricultural planes of Sindh and southern Punjab during the decade.
Temperature Forecast:
Day time temperature may remain in range 30-40°C in most of the agricultural planes of the country during the decade. Day time temperature may fall by 2-3°C in lower central and south Punjab, adjoining areas of lower KPK and upper Sindh in 2nd half of the decade.
Rain Forecast:
Monsoon weather system is approaching towards southeastern parts of the country. Due to which light to moderate rain is expected in the agricultural planes of Sindh and adjoining planes of Balochistan during first half of the decade.
Monsoon currents and westerly waves are continuously penetrating into upper half of the country and their strength may increase in the 2nd half. Due to which light to moderate rain is expected in the agricultural planes of Punjab, KPK, Kashmir and GB during the decade.
Wind Forecast:
Gusty winds may prevail occasionally in the monsoon belt and adjoining areas during the decade.
Advice for Farmers:

•   Irrigation practice may be delayed in the areas of upper half of the country where monsoon rains are expected during the decade.
•    Farmers of cotton belt and other crops in the lower half of the country including agricultural planes of southern Punjab, Sindh and adjoining areas of Balochistan are advised to stop irrigation practices due to heavy rainfall occurred in the last decade and predicted  rains during the decade.
•   Farmers should be aware of the adverse affects of stagnant water in the fields, especially in cotton and maize fields. Mechanism for drainage of stagnant water should be made on priority and necessary measurements in this regard should be taken.

Rain / thunderstorms with gusty winds have been reported mainly from Punjab, Kashmir, GB and isolated places in KPK, Sindh and at a few places in Balochistan.
Temperature Forecast:
Temperature may decrease 2-3°C in agricultural planes of upper Sindh, central and southern planes of Punjab, lower KPK and adjoining areas of Balochistan during first half of the decade and may gradually increase by almost the same extent during 2nd half of the decade. This rise may be more pronounced in the Southern Punjab and upper Sindh, during the 2nd half of the decade
Rain Forecast:
Monsoon currents are penetrating into northeastern and in southeastern parts of the country and will continue to penetrate during the decade. Due to which light to moderate rain is expected in Kashmir, GB, KPK, Northern Punjab, Central Balochistan and heavy rainfall expected in coastal belt of Sindh during the decade mostly from 2nd of September and may persist for two to three days. However another monsoon current may also penetrate into the northern parts of the country from 7th of September due to which light to moderate rain may occur at isolated places in Northern Punjab, KPK and Kashmir.

Gusty winds may prevail occasionally in the monsoon belt and adjoining areas during the decade.

Past Weather (11th August to 20th August, 2011):
Rain / thunderstorms with gusty winds have been reported from Sindh, Punjab, KPK and at a few places in Balochistan including Barkhan, Sibbi and Khuzdar.
Temperature Forecast:
Temperature may rise 2-3°C in agricultural planes of upper Sindh, central and southern planes of Punjab, lower KPK and adjoining areas of Balochistan during first half of the decade and may gradually drop by the same extent during cloudy/rainy days mostly during 2nd half of the decade.  Day time temperature may range 35-45°C during first half and 30 to 40°C during 2nd half of the country in most of the agricultural planes of the country. However the range may remain 35-45°C during the decade in central, southern parts of Punjab, lower KPK, upper Sindh and adjoining areas of Balochistan.
Rain Forecast:
Monsoon currents are penetrating into northeastern and occasionally in southern parts of the country and will continue to penetrate during the decade. Due to which light to moderate rain is expected in Kashmir, GB, KPK and northern Punjab during the decade mostly from 24th of August and may persist for two to three days. Rain / thunderstorms with gusty winds have been mainly reported from Northern Punjab and at isolated places in rest of Punjab, Kashmir, Gilgit Baltistan, KPK and at a few places in Southeastern Sindh, northeast & central Balochistan.
Temperature Forecast:
Temperature may remain unchange, in most parts of the country due to prevailing monsoon weather systems (especially during the 1st half of the decade) however it may rise and remain within the range 40-45°C in some central, southern parts of Balochistan and upper Sindh.
Rain Forecast:
Mainly cloudy weather is expected in the agricultural plains of the country for most of the days during the decade. Monsoon weather system is prevailing in upper parts of the country and in southeastern parts of Sindh; it may remain in the present conditions for first two days of the decade in southeastern Sindh. Temperature Forecast:
Temperature may fall 1-2°C in the areas of Punjab, which is being affected by pre-monsoon currents, including Northeast and Southeast Punjab, Kashmir, Gilgit Baltistan and hilly areas of KPK. However temperature may raise 1-2°C in the lower half of the country including plains areas of KPK, western plains of Punjab, Balochistan and Sindh. Heat wave conditions are likely to prevail over southern parts of the country during the decade.
 Rain Forecast:
Rain/thunderstorm is expected from 21st-23rd of June in Northeast Punjab, Southern Punjab and hilly areas of KPK. In 2nd half of the decade Rain/ thunderstorm with gusty winds are expected from 27-29th of this month in the above mentioned areas including coastal belt of Sindh.

Gusty winds may occur in the upper half of the country during the decade. Dust storms/gusty winds are expected in the lower agricultural plains of the country during the decade.

Past weather (01 May-10 May 2011):
Light to moderate rain/thunderstorms with gusty winds have been reported from Kashmir, GB, KPK, Punjab and Balochistan. Due to which harvesting/threshing of wheat and other Rabi crops have been delayed/badly affected in upper half of the country. Dry weather has been reported from agricultural planes of Sindh during this period. 

Temperature Forecast:
Seasonal increase in temperature may continue and daily temperature may rise by 2-40C in the agricultural planes of the country, particularly in the 2nd half of the decade. The rise may be more pronounced and consistent in the central and lower agricultural planes due to clear weather expected in these areas including central and South Punjab, Upper Sindh, lower agricultural planes of KPK and agricultural areas of northeast and central Balochistan. Day time temperature may range 40-480C in these areas during this period.

Rain Forecast:
Dry and hot weather (with duststorms in the lower planes) is expected in most of the agricultural planes of the country during the decade. Light to moderate rain is expected in upper parts, mostly in upper hilly areas of the country including upper KPK, GB, Kashmir, and Potohar region during the first two days of the decade.

Wind Forecast:
During first half of the decade gusty winds may prevail over the agricultural planes of south Punjab, northwest Balochistan and coastal belt of the country. Whereas in the 2nd half of the decade, gusty winds may prevail over coastal areas of Sindh and Balochistan.

Advice For The Farmers

• Due to expected hot and dry weather in coming days evapotranspiration may increase thus causing moisture stress. Harvesting of main rabi crop i.e.  wheat is almost completed in central and lower parts. In upper parts of the country it is on harvesting stage and dry and hot weather is suitable for the crop at this stage.

• The farmers should complete the harvesting /threshing of rabi crops at the earliest for on time sowing of coming kharif crops to avoid the possible loss in the final yield due to late sowing of the crops specially cotton.
• Land preparation/ sowing of cotton has started. The crop at sowing stage/germination needs sufficient moisture. The farmers should therefore make proper use of available moisture and irrigate the crop as per requirement.

Dry and hot weather reported during the last ten days in most of the agricultural plains of the country except KPK, GB and Kashmir, where light to moderate rain was reported during last two days of the month. Light rain/drizzle was reported at a few places in northwestern parts of Balochistan.
Temperature forecast
During the first half of the decade (1-5 May), increasing trend in temperature may continue and may rise by 4-60C in the agricultural plains of South Punjab, Upper Sindh, lower KPK and at a few places in northeast Balochistan. This heat wave may subsidize during 2nd half of the decade (6-10 May) bringing the temperatures to the normal.
Rain forecast

Weather Advisory for Farmers (19-30 April 2011)

According to the data collected and analyzed by National Agromet. Centre of Pakistan Meteorological Department, the farmers of agriculture areas have been informed that,
 Light to moderate rainfall/thunderstorms and gusty winds have been reported from most of the agricultural plains of Kashmir/GB, Khyber Pakhtoonkhawa, Punjab, northern and central Balochistan for the last four days (16-19th April). Due to this rain spell harvesting of wheat crop has delayed in these areas.
However in the remaining days of this month, mostly dry weather /clear skies is expected. However, light rain/drizzle may occur at a few places in northern parts of the country including agricultural plains of upper KPK, and northern areas of Punjab during last days of this month.
Keeping these facts in mind farmers are advised to complete wheat harvesting/threshing, in the areas where wheat has obtained full maturity for on time land preparation/sowing of coming Kharif crops, especially maize and cotton.
