Strengthening of Early Warning System in Pakistan

Objectives

The objective of this MoU is to strengthen early warning system in the country under the umbrella of PMD through WFP financial support.

Following responsibilities of the stakeholders are chalked out.

Obligations of WFP:

Support PMD to conduct four workshops in Quetta, Peshawar, Muzzaffarabad and Punjab

Support PMD by equipping three AWS in Tharparkar and DI Khan districts in the monitoring of droughts.

Assist PMD’s effort in preparing climate information into local languages, liaison with other organizations & media by paying the salaries of two Researchers;

Obligations of Pakistan Meteorology Department

      1. Take all reasonable measures to ensure that all relevant stakeholders (Govt agencies, Media personnels, NGOs etc) are get involved in Media workshops through official nomination requests. .

Make arrangements to develop radio programs and air the programs to various parts of the country by engaging the relevent sector.

      1. Submit for WFP’s record the Technical Specifications for AWS to be procured, specifications for communication devices to be procured well in time.

With mutual Agreement Pakistan Meteorological Department & WFP have agreed to organize awareness workshops for journalists from print and electronic media for awareness raising and network development for future early weather updates disseminations in different parts of the country. Automatic weather stations (AWS) for Tharparkar district and DI Khan district will be installed to enhance drought monitoring. Under this initiative, GPRS communication system will be developed for near real-time reception of meteorological data being acquired at various parts of the country through AWS.
